  • Madison County’s new emergency notification system, CodeRED, is now in service. Every resident of Madison County who has a land line or has registered a cell phone can receive general emergency messages regarding, evacuation notices, chemical spills, or a missing child alert. Weather warning notifications will be made to any resident or business who registers their land or cell line with the system. Weather warning notifications are designed to be delivered to targeted areas. If your address is in the path of the storm, you will receive notification via your registered phone. If you are not in the path of a storm warning, you will not receive a notification.

  • Due to the new trucks we are using to pick up trash, residents must bag trash and place it inside your cart. Drivers cannot “throw” extra bags of trash, or large items, into the truck. If you generate more trash than your cart can hold, you can lease an additional cart from Republic. The cost is $4.00/month, billed annually by Republic. You can still set out bulk items at no charge – these will be picked up on Tuesdays. Please contact Republic Services’ customer service department at 618-656-6883 if you have any questions or concerns.

  • Pool Opens June 1
  • Drivers Needed

The Senior Bus program is seeking volunteer drivers. The van operates Mondays-Fridays from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m. Drivers participate on a rotating schedule. The van does not operate on weekends or Federal holidays. A Class M license is required. If interested, contact the Village Hall at 377-8051.

  • The Bethalto Arboretum is located on the east end of town and was developed in 1966 after the demise of the railroad era in Bethalto. It is one of the few arboretums in the area. A directory of trees and bushes contained in the arboretum may be viewed at Village Hall.

  • Central Park in Bethalto consists of a stage amphitheater, swimming pool, lighted tennis courts, baseball fields, soccer fields, skateboard park, and a newly remodeled basketball court..

  • Culp Lane Park is located on the northwest end of town and was established in 2005. Among its many features are a fishing lake, a children's play area, a walking path and a new arboretum. It has become a popular site for Bethalto residents to come for exercise, parties or picnics.

  • Central Park is home to the Bethalto Homecoming each Labor Day weekend, featuring bands, carnival rides and a variety of culturally diverse food and beverages. The park is conveniently located in the center of town, directly adjacent to the village hall.

  • In 1998, a fire at a local home revealed a perfectly protected log cabin within the structure. State historical preservationists estimate that the cabin was built in the mid-1800s. Bethalto’s school children collected more than one million pennies to move and restore the cabin to its present site next to the Museum.

Village Administration

Mayor

winslowAfter 36 years with the Bethalto Police Department (including eight as Chief), and a stint as village trustee, Alan Winslow is beginning his first term as Mayor.

A 1978 graduate of Civic Memorial High School, Winslow’s public service dates to his high school days, when he was a part-time dispatcher and a dogcatcher for the village.

One of the first things I want to do is gather groups for a session on the village’s future. The more immediate thing will be getting with some of our service organizations, and specifically I’m going to try to get our business community together in one room. I want to establish a partnership between village and local business.

Getting and keeping business is a high priority. I remain hopeful about a potential multimillion-dollar development in the former Wayside Estates subdivision across Illinois Route 111 from St. Louis Regional Airport. The village has other major projects that will occupy my time this year, including the expansion of the water plant at the bottom of Ninth Street hill and the second phase of the village sports complex off Culp Lane. The sport complex plan calls for the addition of four multi-use baseball diamonds, two Little League diamonds, a football field, a soccer field, parking lots, the creation of a road connecting to Stadium Drive and a bridge that would connect the new portion to the existing sports complex.

Another project is the need to update the village’s comprehensive plan. It’s an opportunity for people to get face-to-face with all of us in government and determine where we want to be in the next 10 years.

Clerk

Village Clerk Sue Lowrance is a life-long Bethalto resident, and can think of no better place to call home. The daughter of the late Robert (Bob) and Barbara Hilliard, Sue graduated in 1986 from Civic Memorial High School and went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Sue, who was appointed to the clerk’s office in April, 2008, is now serving her first full term as Clerk. She came to the Village after a 17-year career in retail as the office manager for Ace Hardware of Bethalto.

She is active in the community, being a member of the Bethalto Spirit, as well as an avid supporter of the Bethalto Boys & Girls Club, and CMHS and Trimpe athletics. Sue also serves as treasurer of the Bethalto Eagles Baseball & Softball Club, and is a member of the Municipal Clerks of Illinois and Southwestern Illinois Municipal Clerks Association.

Sue is married to Jay Lowrance, and the couple have a son, Jonathan, and a daughter, Jaylyn.

Sue is proud to have the opportunity to serve the residents of Bethalto; her office door is always open and she looks forward to meeting with all of you!
